Tango

There are errors in tango. Not like in life. It is simple, that’s what makes tango so great – Al Pacino said in the movie "Scent of a women".

Tango is passion, happiness, sadness, seduction, secret. It's a dance that encompasses the whole spectrum of emotion from pain to state of trans.

At the mention of tango, you are most likely to think of a high society. The steps of this dance appear to be precisely determined, to give away the elegance of the movement, but tango is a dance of improvisation created among ordinary, poor people.

Tango is a sad thought that is danced, said Enrique Santos Discépolo, the Argentinian composer and playwright.  Basic step is a step inside, it starts as a lightweight walk and then depends on the imagination of the dancer and his "dialogue" with music.

At the end of the 19th century, towards Argentina, known at the time as a promised land or "the Land of Silver", rivers of emigrants from Italy, France, Hungary and many other countries rushed. All of them were full of hope and expectations that in this far away country they shall find their happiness.

But there, despite the fact that there was work, suddenly there was a lot of people ready to work, so the salaries were miserable. The emigrants were suddenly joined by freed slaves and all of them lived together in poor settlements, creating a unique mixture of ethnic and cultural traditions. Like all the poor people, they entertained themselves singing about their sadness, joys, longing, nostalgia, loneliness. The song was a comfort. And where people sing, spontaneously comes the dance, and so tango was born.

There are no written mentions about the origin of the name of this dance, it is assumed that it was named after one type of percussion used by members of African nations. The first instruments that accompanied the tango were accordion and guitar.

Although the dance is improvisation, tango has one rule – a man leads, a woman follows.

The essence of the dance is to explore each other and touch the deepest feelings, awaken emotion and passion. They don't dance for the audience - tango is an intimate dance, no matter how many people are looking at the couple, for them audience does not exist.

Only later, as the tango began to spread around world and made its way into dance schools, precise steps were introduced.

In Europe, tango first arrived in Paris, a bright and open city, a city of fashion and glamour where dance always had an important place. From there, it began to spread across Europe. The thirties and forties of the twentieth century were considered the golden age of tango.

Because it very often has to do with sensory, the tango was banned and accused of having more to do with erotic than dancing.

American theologist Campbell Morgan said that the tango is a confirmation of Darwin's theory, or the return of a man to a monkey level of development. At the same time, in Europe, they suggested that Christians should not dance tango, that this dance is responsible for ending families and social life. Wherever someone played the tango, he had problems. By the opinion of many, tango was considered indecent.

And while many condemned it, Leo Tolstoy saw tango as an anthem of anti-capitalism because it frees suppressed emotions of the lower classes.

Interestingly, even though it became popular as a dance of emotion and passion, it was even very popular in Argentine brothels, in the begging only men played it. It was a macho competition – two men who defy each other's bodies and all in order to seduce a woman.
